Night World : Daughters of Darkness Chapter 7

Discovering Todd and Vic turned out not to be simple. It was late evening when Mary-Lynnettewalked into the Briar Creek general store, which sold everything from nails to nylons to canned peas. â€Å"Hi, Bunny. I don't assume you've seen Todd orVic around?† Rabbit Marten gazed upward from behind the counter. She was beautiful, with delicate light hair, a round, dimpled face, and a bashful appearance. She was in MaryLynnette's group at school. â€Å"Did you look at theGold Creek Bar?† Mary-Lynnette gestured. â€Å"And at their homes, andat the other store, and at the sheriff's office.† The sheriff's office was additionally city corridor and the open library. â€Å"Well, in the event that they'renot playing pool, they're usuallyplinking.† Plinkingwas shooting atcans for training. â€Å"Yeah, yet where?† Mary-Lynnette said. Rabbit shook her head, studs gleaming. â€Å"Yourguess is comparable to mine.† She dithered, gazing down at her fingernail skin, which she was pushing back with a little unpolished pointed wooden stick. â€Å"But, you know, I've heard they go down to Mad Dog Creeksometimes.† Her wide blue eyes lifted to Mary Lynnette's genuinely. Distraught Dog Creek. . . Goodness, amazing. Mary-Lynnette frowned. â€Å"I know.† Bunny brought her shoulders up in a shiver.†I wouldn't go down there. I'd consider that body the entire time.† â€Å"Yeah, me, as well. All things considered, much appreciated, Bun. See you.† Rabbit analyzed her fingernail skin fundamentally. â€Å"Good hunting,† she said absently. Mary-Lynnette left the store, squinting in the hot, foggy August daylight. Central avenue wasn'tbig. It had a bunch of block and stone buildingsfrom the days when Briar Creek had been a dash for unheard of wealth gracefully town, and a couple of modem outline structures with stripping paint. Todd and Vic weren't in any of them. All things considered, what now? Mary-Lynnette moaned. There was no street to Mad Dog Creek, just a path that was continually obstructed by new development and deadfall. What's more, everybody knew more than plinking went on there. In the event that they're out there, they're most likely chasing, she thought. Also drinking, perhaps utilizing drugs. Weapons and lager. And afterward there's that body. The body had been discovered a year ago around thistime. A man; an explorer, from his knapsack. No one knew what his identity was or how he'd passed on the body wastoo dried up and bit by creatures to tell. Be that as it may individuals discussed apparitions coasting around the rivulet the previous winter. Mary-Lynnette murmured again and got into her station cart. The vehicle was antiquated, it was corroded, it made disturbing sounds when compelled to quicken, yet it was hers, andMary-Lynnette gave a valiant effort to keep it alive. She adored it in light of the fact that there was a lot of room in back to store her telescope. At Briar Creek's just service station she angled a looked over organic product blade from under the seat and went to work, prying at the corroded gas top spread. Somewhat higher up . . . nearly, nearly . . . presently curve †¦ The spread flew open. â€Å"Ever consider going into the safecracking business?† a voice behind her said. €Å"you have the touch.† Mary-Lynnette turned. â€Å"Hi, Jeremy.† He grinned a grin that demonstrated for the most part in his eyes, which were beloved earthy colored with absurdly darklashes. On the off chance that I were going to fall for a person and I'm not-itwould be for someone like him.Not for a major light feline who figures he can pick his sisters' companions. It was an unsettled issue, in any case Jeremy didn't goout with young ladies. He was a maverick. â€Å"Want me to look under the hood?† He cleaned his hands on a cloth. â€Å"No, much obliged. I simply checked everything last week.† Mary-Lynnette began to siphon gas. He got a squeegee and a shower jug and started to wash the windshield. His developments were deft and delicate and his face was completely grave. Mary-Lynnette needed to swallow a snicker herself, butshe valued him not chuckling at the hollowed glass furthermore, consumed windshield wipers. She'd generally had an odd sentiment of family relationship with Jeremy. He was the just individual in Briar Creek who appeared to be even slightlyinterested in cosmology he'd helped her fabricate a model of the nearby planetary group in eighth grade, and ofcourse he'd observed a year ago's lunar obscuration with her. His folks had passed on in Medford when he was justa infant, and his uncle got him to Briar Creek a Fleetwood trailer. The uncle was peculiar alwayswandering off to dowse for gold in the Klamath wil derness. One day he didn't return. From that point forward, Jeremy lived alone in the . trailer in the forested areas. He did unspecialized temp jobs and worked at the corner store to bring in cash. What's more, if his garments weren't as decent assome of different children', he couldn't have cared less or he didn't allow it to appear. The handle of the gas hose clicked in MaryLynnette's grasp. She understood she had been staring off into space. â€Å"Anything else?† Jeremy said. The windshieldwas senior member. â€Å"No †¦ well, really, yes. You haven't, um, seenTodd Akers or Vic Kimble today, have you?† Jeremy stopped really busy taking her twentydollar bill. â€Å"Why?† â€Å"I simply needed to converse with them,† Mary-Lynnettesaid. She could feel heat in her cheeks. Goodness, God, hethinks I need to see Todd and Vic socially-and he believes I'm insane for askinghim. She rushed to clarify. â€Å"It's simply that Bunny saidthey may be somewhere near Mad Dog Creek, so I thoughtyou might have seen them, perhaps at some point toward the beginning of today, since you live down around there†¦.† Jeremy shook his head. â€Å"I left around early afternoon, yet I didn'thear any discharges from the brook at the beginning of today. Air conditioning tually, I don't think they've been there all summerI continue instructing them to remain away.† He said it discreetly, without accentuation, however Mary-Lynnette had the abrupt inclination that possibly evenTodd also, Vic may hear him out. She'd never knownJeremy to get in a battle. Be that as it may, some of the time a look came into his level earthy colored eyes that was ..: practically startling. As though there was something underneath thatquiet-fellow outside something crude and unadulterated and savage that could do a great deal of harm whenever stirred. â€Å"Mary-Lynnette-I realize you most likely think thisis not my concern, however †¦ well, I think you should avoid those folks. In the event that you truly wantto go get them, let me go with you.† Goodness. Mary-Lynnette felt a warm flush of appreciation. She wouldn't take him up on the offer †¦ yet it was decent of him to make it. â€Å"Thanks,† she said. â€Å"I'll be fine, yet †¦ much appreciated .† She looked as he went to get her change insidethe station. What must it feel like to be all alone since you were twelve years of age? Possibly he neededhelp. Perhaps she ought to request that her father offer him some unspecialized temp jobs around the house. He did them for every other person. She simply must be cautious she knew Jeremy despised whatever resembled foundation. He brought back the change. â€Å"Here you go. What's more, Mary-Lynnette †¦Ã¢â‚¬ She gazed upward. â€Å"If you do discover Todd and Vic, be careful.† â€Å"I know.† â€Å"I mean it.† â€Å"I know,† Mary-Lynnette said. She had gone after the change, however he hadn't let go of it. hedid something odd: He opened her twisted fingers with one hand while giving her the bills and coins with the other. At that point he twisted her fingers back over it. Essentially, he was holding her hand. The snapshot of physical contact astonished herand contacted her. She wound up seeing his meager earthy colored fingers, at their solid yet fragile hold on her hand, at the gold seal ring with the dark structure that he wore. She was much progressively astonished when she looked up at his face once more. There was open worry in his eyes-and something like regard. For a moment she had a wild and totally mysterious drive to tell him everything. In any case, she could simply envision what he would think. Jeremy was extremely handy. â€Å"Thanks, Jeremy,† she stated, conjuring up a frail grin. â€Å"Take care.† â€Å"Youtake care. There are individuals who'd miss you on the off chance that anything happened.† He grinned, however she could feel his stressed look on her even as she drove away. All right, now what? All things considered, she'd squandered the vast majority of the day searching for Todd and Vic. What's more, presently, with the picture of Jeremy's level earthy colored eyes in her psyche, she thought about whether it had been a moronic thought from the earliest starting point. Earthy colored eyes †¦ and what shading eyes did the bigblond feline have? Weird, it was difficult to remember. She felt that they had looked earthy colored at one moment that he was discussing his good old family. In any case at the point when he'd said he enjoyed a young lady with soul, she recalled that them being a kind of vapid blue. What's more, when that odd blade glimmer had flashed in them, hadn't they been cold dark? Oh,who cares?Maybe they were orange. We should simply return home at this point. Prepare for this evening. Why Nancy Drew consistently found the individuals she needed to examine? Why? Why? Why me? Debris was gazing at a yellow cedar sobbing into a rivulet. A squirrel too dumb to even think about getting out of the sun was gazing back at him. On a stone next to him a reptile lifted initial one foot, at that point another. It wasn't reasonable. It wasn't right. He didn't trust it. He'd generally been fortunate. Or possibly he'd alwaysmanaged to get away from a hairsbreadth away from debacle. Be that as it may, this time the fiasco had hit and it was an absolute obliteration. All that he was, all that he trusted abouthimself †¦ would he be able to lose that in a short time? For a young lady who was presumably disturbed and absolutely more risky than every one of the three of his sisters set up? No, he finished up drearily. In no way, shape or form. Not in a short time. It just took five seconds. He knew such a large number of young ladies decent young ladies. Witches withmysterious grins, vampires with tasty bends, shapeshifters with adorable fuzzy tails. Indeed, even human young ladies with extravagant games vehicles who never appeared to mind at the point when he snacked their necks. For what reason wouldn't it be able to have been one of them? All things considered, it wasn't. Furthermore, there was no reason for pondering about its foul play. The inquiry was, what was he going task abou

HT@MIT Foodie Edition

HT@MIT Foodie Edition Teriyaki House Hey guys, Im back to blogging once a week after a ridiculously crazy last few work heavy months, think Dilbert meets the Drew Carey show (Ill explain next week). Okay, so this weeks [emailprotected] is all about the Boston food I love. Now this post isnt to say that these are undoubtedly the three best restaurants in the Cambridge/Boston area but I love them all for various reasons that Ill explain. Well start off with Teriyaki House! Teriyaki House Now Im not sure if I love Teriyaki House for the food or the wonderful memories Ive made here but theres no doubt they make some of the best sesame chicken Ive ever had (a friend Matt O. on the other hand would swear by their chicken and broccoli). Teriyaki house is a combination Chinese/Japanese/Sushi/Bubble Tea restaurant on Boylston St. thats centrally located and reasonably priced. While you may get more authentic Chinese food in Chinatown Teriyaki House offers some of the best, what Ive been told all my life is, Chinese food. Whether its birthdays, the meal before ring delivery or a Saturday afternoon, T-House is always on the list of potential restaurants. Oasis Oasis is a different animal from Teriyaki House, while I frequent the latter, getting to the former is more of a luxury. Oasis is a Brazilian BBQ joint that can be characterized with one phrase, ridiculously large portions. The amount of food that Oasis gives you for a mere 12 dollars is amazing. First they plop down not one but TWO steaks that covers your whole table. You think its done there but what pair of steaks is complete without sides? Then comes the rice and the beans and the fries and you flag down a waitress to get your anticipatory doggie bag. And not only is the food abundant, its also delicious. The Friendly Toast Now Ive saved my favorite restaurant for last. A mere 11 minute walk from EC, The Friendly Toast is always at the top of my recommended restaurant list. Its got the best of all worlds, giant portions, reasonable price, perfect location AND an awesome retro/hipster atmosphere that keeps me coming back. I really cant say enough good things about The Friendly Toast, every meal Ive had here was wonderful and it continues to be the first place I take guests from out of town. The only downside is that if you arrive Saturday or Sunday morning, prepare to wait over two hours without a reservation. Tune in next Monday to learn my answer to the question what do you want to do when you grow up?.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1477 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/08/16 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Catch 22 Essay Did you like this example? When exploring the concept of moral appropriateness in a text, one seeks out what could be considered as what would be right, judging the situation by hand. Generally speaking when seeking out the right in circumstances the decision comes from analyzing the physical and emotional outlooks on a character in text. In this case what is being disected in terms of moral appropriateness is one of the characters from the satirical novel by Joseph Heller; Catch-22. Nately is young man of age who resides as a not commonly character in Catch-22. He is known for being someone who is sensitive and who comes from a wealthy family. According to Catch-22; His nature was invariably gentle and polite (Heller 248) and His childhood had been a pleasant, though disciplined one (Heller 248). In terms of exploring moral appropriateness with this character, the entirety of Natelys context revolves around another character. The whore or Natelys whore is a prostitute from Rome that Nately falls in love with in Catch-22. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Catch-22 by Joseph Heller" essay for you Create order When analyzing the situations of Nately in Catch-22 , dissecting Natelys background, and what his actions are in the novel we can conclude distinctions on what others or the readers might see as morally inappropriate. For example, Nately comes from a family of wealth yet has fallen in love with a prostitute. A prostitute in the eyes of society is looked upon lowly. This is because their profession involves committing intimate acts with strangers in exchange for money. Usually a woman who does this in the place of poverty. Without knowing that Nately comes from a rich family, there would be no way in pointing out the moral inappropriateness between him and his whore. The appropriateness lies within their personal context that Heller has inputted in Catch-22. It is not only the scandal between Nately and his whore that is morally inappropriate but what his intentions are revealed in Catch-22. After confessing his love to her with Yossarian and Arfy, Nately says that his intentions lie in the means of marrying the whore. The moral inappropriateness is what Nately believes to be morally appropriate. What Nately believes to be morally appropriate is to be together with the whore in terms of marriage. The character stresses out his defiance when other characters such as Arfy, opposed to his idea of being in love with the whore. In response to his statement, Arfy says I can just imagine what your father and mother would say if they knew you were running around with filthy trollops like that one. Your father is very distinguished man, you know (Heller 288). After Nately declares that he shall be marrying the whore as well Arfy responds with Ho, ho.ho,ho,ho! Now youre really talking stupid. Why youre not even old enough to know what true love is (Heller 288). However there are instances in Catch-22 where readers will suggest Nately and his actions are more morally appropriate rather than inappropriate. For instance, after the whore had slept for eighteen hours, satirically it was that that made her fall in love with Nately. It is satirically in a sense that after longing for the whore to love him, it only took her sleeping for while to fall in love with Nately. Furthermore, Nately felt authority over her and the whores kid sister, leading to him developing a demanding side over the whore in Catch-22. Get dressed (Heller 356),Because I dont want them to see you without any clothes on (Heller 356) are things that he ordered the whore to do. When the whore questioned him, his response was Because I say so! (Heller 356). Readers would analyze his behavior to be morally inappropriate. This is due to the fact that he is forcing her to do things out of her will only because she has fallen in love with him. It is suggesting that her returning he r love gives him the right to show authority over her. Generally, others would suggest that this shouldnt be the case and that the whore should be free to do as she pleases. On another hand, what Nately demanded of her wasnt to suit his personal interest but rather, he was configuring her image. When he tells her to put her clothes on he says this because he does not want other men to see her in a vulnerable state that would otherwise be inappropriate. For instance, if he didnt tell her to cover up then the whore would continue to go her way. That way being the image of a whore. However, when it comes to moral appropriateness, one has to think that what would be best is if neither character acted upon their actions. Nately neednt tell his whore what to do out of his will because he should not have authority over another human without their consent. The whore should not continue to act scandalously otherwise her relationship with Nately would be unbalanced in terms of class. The reasoning behind Natalys actions are simple enough. He grows authoritative with the whore because he does not want her to be seen in the same way she is seen by him in the eyes of other men. He wishes to marry her because he loves her. Although despite the drastically different characteristic he develops, it can be be easily justified if one focuses on the whores background more than his. Natalys actions can be justified good in the sense that after the whore falls in love with him, he suggests that They made a wonderful family group, he decided (Heller 356). In reference of the whores sister he thought; The little girl would go to college when she was old enough, to Smith or Radcliffe or Bryn Mawrhe would see to that (Heller 356). Overall, these actions make create a balance with this character. On one hand, Nately, like any other person contains flaws that may contribute to their moral appropriateness and then others will lean forward to inappropriateness. In this case, Natelys ideas and what he believes to be right in overall can be considered good. To validate this statement, further into the satirical text it is discovered that Nately wishes to obtain more missions, stating in the process that I dont want to go home until I can take her back with me (Heller 368). Following these events it is later found that Nately has died while in another mission and it was caused by Dobbs. That being said, going back to when Nately desired to have more missions in order to be with the whore, Yossarian questioned; She means that much to you? (Heller 369). Nately agreed and responded with I might never see her again (Heller 369). What is considered to be right by Nately could not just be seen morally wrong in the eyes of the reader but other characters he interacts with. Yossarian whom is another character from Catch-22 plainly opposes to what Nately believes in. In Natelys case it would be morally appropriate, which is to engage in more missions. Catch-22 references For the first time in his life, Yossarian prayed. He got down on his knees and prayed to Nately not to volunteer to fly more than seventy missions after Chief White Halfoat did die of pneumonia in the hospital and Nately had applied for his job (Heller 368). The negative outlook Yossarian has on Natleys beliefs can have readers on the same terms. Morally speaking, Natelys death can not be justified as good in any way. Although one can draw emotional pity from the event, they can also draw the conclusion that Nately did wrong in applying himself for more missions. Why he did wrong in applying for more missions mainly revolves around the fact that by doing this he died in the process. His death could have been avoidable but it all relied on Nately to realize this. Nately could have realized his mistake by simply taking Yossarians advice in consideration. Others could argue that what Nately did was morally right. The idea that what Nately did was morally right can be argued because he went forward with these missions for a good cause. The good cause being that he did not want to leave the whore and her kid sister alone and wanted to take them with him. Although he did suffer death in the end, there is no other motive that can oppose to the good moral of the circumstances other them his death. The idea of what is morally appropriate and what is not comes in the hands of what most individuals believe, or majority. Often many may see certain actions as the right thing to do while others that are not majority will think the opposite. In this case, while exploring the context of Nately, it can be concluded that this character is specifically drawn to moral appropriateness Works Cited Heller, Joseph. Catch 22. Introduction As Smith, a columnist for Articlemyriad, mentioned, â€Å"Far from being mere entertainment, though, the Bollywood movies represent a powerful means of self- and community expression which Indians are using to define themselves in front of the rest of the world,† (Smith) Exploring the Bollywood movie and its emergency in Asia is an effective way to see whether India has some common culture elements with other Asian countries and whether they are integrating under the impulsion of culture. Dudrah (2006) mentioned in his book Bollywood: Sociology Goes to the Movies, â€Å"Bollywood, the moniker for popular Hindi cinema from Mumbai, India, has become an important catchword in the vocabulary of global South Asian popular culture. † (Dudrah, 2006) It demonstrates that Indian culture dominates in South Asia. Bollywood is a real buzz word at the moment,† said Vinay Virmani, writer and actor of Breakaway, in an interview, â€Å"I think that’s because Bollywood has been able to translate beyond the whole south Asian community. † (Mahmood Mitra, 2011)This opinion is true but maybe too simple as he just considered about the popularity. The opinion I want to argue in this paper is that although Bollywood movies become popular in Asia, the commercial profit they gained is still limited. Maybe Three Idiots, the most successful Bollywood movie in recent years, is the best representative of Bollywood movies which are facing such an embarrassing situation. â€Å"Have you seen the Three Idiots second time? † It may be the first reaction when Hong Kong people talked about this famous Indian movie. It is amazing that a Bollywood movie gained such huge success in Hong Kong. In fact, Three Idiots has run for 13 weeks since it was released in Hong Kong in September, 2011. (3 Idiots Rocks in China Hong Kong, 2011)Although it gained high praise in Hong Kong and other Asia countries, the box-office contributed by Asian countries was still limited. According to the statistics from Box Office Mojo, 60. 8% box-office of Three Idiots came from India (3 IDIOTS box office, 2011) and it was released in only six other Asia countries (or areas), which are Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan. (3 Idiots) Why Bollywood becomes popular in Asia ) Thanks to Slumdog Millionaire Slumdog Millionaire tells a story happened in Indian slums. It is made by Hollywood but full of Bollywood characters, which made many audiences mistake it for a Bollywood movie. As it won the top prize at the Academy Awards and eight Oscars in total including best director and best picture, (The Oscars 2009, 2009) it appealed to more audiences, especially Asians, who regard the Academy Prize as the highest honor of a movie. It took $2,280,068 in its first week in China and $930,097 in Hong Kong. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE-box office, 2009) With the influence of Slumdog Millionaire, people would like to see Bollywood movies with huge interest and curiousness. Bollywood movie become a hit to Asian audiences. 2) A mirror of the issues faced by Asia It is obvious to see the changes in Bollywood movies when comparing those new successful movies with the old ones. The traditional stories about revenge or the love between a rich woman and a penniless man have already been out of date. New Bollywood movies focus more on the modern issues faced by many other Asian countries as well. The issues always mentioned are never leaving ethnic and religious conflicts, gap between the rich and poor and education. For instance, the Three Idiots mentioned before exposed the education problems existing in many Asian countries. The film is about three students who do not fit the traditional and inflexible education method in Indian Institutes of Technology and are considered as idiots by professors. â€Å"However, the movie clearly shows who the three real idiots are – the educational system, the teachers and the parents†, Sudhakar RAM said. Ram, 2010) The performance-oriented system, faculty-led pedagogy and arbitrary parents criticized in this movie exist not only in India, but also other Asian states. In South Korea, academic achievements are regarded as the decisive factor for social success. Only the students getting into prestigious universities can guarantee their social success, while students with other abilities are unrecognized. (Suicide Figures Point to Failure of Education System, 2011) The same phenomena existed in Mainland China. In order to enter a famous university, students pursue higher exam marks rather than knowledge. Teaching methodology basically consists of force-feeding copious amounts of required information directly out of textbooks (often teachers will simply read directly from the text) and students are discouraged from asking questions, particularly if those questions challenge ideology or anything regarded as factual. † (Middle Kingdom Life) As this movies shows the familiar and real problems to Asian audience, people are able to understand the movie better and easily accept it, just as Zoher Abdoolcarim said, â€Å"They laughed when they were meant to and didn’t when they weren’t. (Abdoolcarim, 2011) In addition, Asia, as a growing power, is eager to get the approval from the world. India, with fast development in economy, has more aspiration and shows it by movies. There is a popular Bo llywood movie among Asian audience called My Name Is Khan. It tells a story about how a Muslim man called Khan, in order to get forgiveness from his wife, overcame many difficulties to tell American President that his name had no relationship with terrorists. Although it seems like a love movie, what it shows indeed is the â€Å"questions of religious and national identity†. My Name is Khan – Movie Review, 2010) Asian states, like the Muslim, undergo untold hardships to develop, hoping to get the approval from the world. The emotion and sprit—national identifying—expressed in Bollywood movies reflect the psychology of Asia and fit the taste of Asians. You read "Is Bollywood Shining in Asia" in category "Essay examples" 3) The attracting modern music Dance and songs are the symbols of Bollywood movies. â€Å"A Bollywood movie is incomplete without songs and dance in it. † (Role of dance Choreographer in Bollywood movie songs, 2011) However, young pe ople in Asia seem not interested in the traditional dance and songs in Bollywood movies. Therefore, the Bollywood music changed among with the transformation in movies. It mixed the traditional songs with western elements to produce a new style that appeals international audience, of course, including Asians, rather than the pure classical Indian music that appeals to Indians only. Campus songs which never appeared now become popular in Bollywood movies. ‘Aal Izz Well’ in Three Idiots has oodles of youth feeling, which brings audience back to their college days. 4) With the help of Internet Although playing full-length movie on internet is illegal in some countries, there are no strict restrictions in some Asia countries, like China, which provides audience a chance to watch Bollywood movies through internet. Three Idiots, for example, will be released in December, 2011 in Mainland China. However, the discussion of this movie in Internet lasted for a long time and it even got 8. 9 marks by 19,096 people marking in the Mtime, a websites regarded as Chinese IMDB. Three Idiots) This phenomenon benefits from the Chinese video-sharing websites, such as Tudou and Youku. In fact, this movie was played up to 1,824,335 times only in Tudou (Three Idiots). The same is Devads, which is marked 8. 4 in Mtime (Devdas) and played 279,469 times in Tudou. (Devdas) The force of internet cannot be overlooked in popularizing Bollywood movies. Why Bollywood movies have a little profit? As the statistics from Box Office Mojo show, most Bollywood movies are released in four other Asia areas ma inly —Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Although Bollywood movies have satisfied box-offices in these areas, the profit they gained in other Asian areas was still low compared to domestic market. The reason may be that Bollywood movies don’t squeeze into the two main markets in Asia—China and Japan because of the strict movie importing restrictions. China has strict import restrictions that limit the number of foreign blockbusters to 20 per year. â€Å"Film imports are still controlled by the state-owned China Film Group. † (Lee, 2011) And in Japan, the situation is even worse. â€Å"But selecting films for release in Japan is not easy. , said Aki Sugihara, general manager at licensing and acquisition department of Nikkatsu Corp, â€Å"The rights for ‘3 Idiots’ had been sold to every Asian country except Japan. † (IANS, 2011) The closing of the two main Asian movie markets makes the profit Bollywood movies gain limit in Asia. Tendency 1) The wall will come down With the globalizati on, the trade wall is decreasing, including the movie import policies. Taiwan is a case in point, who revised the Motion Picture law–dropping its film import restrictions—–to meet WTO demand in 2001. Many Bollywood movies, which are not released in Mainland China and Hong Kong, can be found on Taiwan screens, like Om Shanti Om and Taare Zameen Par. Taiwan is just a start as its policy influences other countries. The success of Three Idiots in Taiwan spirited South Korea to release it, according to a Korean industry office. (Bhat, 2011) The prospect in Mainland China is also bright. Thanks to the efforts of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, India got a quota of four out of the 20 imported movies per year. Baru, 2010)What’s more, as the deadline given by the World Trade Organization when China end its movie import restrictions is 19 March 2011, China is expected to raise the import quota to 30 films this year and a little more each year subsequently. (Jaffe, 2011) It is inspiring news for not only Bollywood but also the world, which can also be regarded as a symbol that the free and open movie market is a tendency in such a global world. 2) The cooperation can be realized Bollywood is exporting its movies to more countries by cooperating with foreign companies to produce movies. My Name is Khan, a Bollywood movie produced and marketed by Fox Star Studios, gained $38,326,589 in oversea market. (My Name Is Khan) It pointed out a new way for Bollywood to gain profit in Asia, which is cooperating with Asian companies. In fact, the Chinese government’s official film production company has cooperated with Bollywood to make a movie called Gold Struck. â€Å"Since the film is being supported by China-based production companies, it will not be considered a foreign import and will fall outside the censorship restrictions that have impeded Bollywood’s entry into the China market,† Cindy Shyu, CEO of Lighthouse Productions said. Krishnan, 2010) Also Aki Sugihara from Japan mentioned, â€Å"If our co-production expands, there will be a chance of getting into co-production with Indian films. † (IANS, 2011) By cooperation, Bollywood may knock at the door of China and Japan, and enter into these two huge Asian markets step by step. Conclusion Bol lywood, which used to be regarded as â€Å"a factory of dances and songs†, is no longer what it was. In a global world, Bollywood is also expanding its influence power to Asia, even to the world. Going by the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Bollywood began to export its movies with a new image. It changes the style of dance and songs and pays more attention to the contents of movies, which expose the same issues Asians face and inspire emotional resonance. In addition, the internet popularizing also promotes the spread of Bollywood movies. However, Bollywood has fame but little profit in Asia because of the strict restrictions, especially in China and Japan. In another word, Bollywood’s emergence has already beyond South Asia but the true commercial success is still limited to domestic market. Although it seems that Bollywood has loss in Asia in terms of commerce from current movie market state, we cannot deny that Bollywood movies have potential to win because of the falling-down restrictions and the tiny cooperation with Asian movie companies. Bollywood is not shining in Asia now, but the time for it to shine is not far away. Reference SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE-box office. (2009, 12 20). Locke, Berkeley & Hume Essays (1377 words) - Epistemology

Locke, Berkeley & Hume Enlightenment began with an unparalleled confidence in human reason. The new science's success in making clear the natural world through Locke, Berkeley, and Hume affected the efforts of philosophy in two ways. The first is by locating the basis of human knowledge in the human mind and its encounter with the physical world. Second is by directing philosophy's attention to an analysis of the mind that was capable of such cognitive success. John Locke set the tone for enlightenment by affirming the foundational principle of empiricism: There is nothing in the intellect that was not previously in the senses. Locke could not accept the Cartesian rationalist belief in innate ideas. According to Locke, all knowledge of the world must ultimately rest on man's sensory experience. The mind arrives at sound conclusions through reflection after sensation. In other words the mind combines and compounds sensory impressions or ideas into more complex concepts building it's conceptual understanding. There was skepticism in the empiricist position mainly from the rationalist orientation. Locke recognized there was no guarantee that all human ideas of things genuinely resembled the external objects they were suppose to represent. He also realized he could not reduce all complex ideas, such as substance, to sensations. He did know there were three factors in the process of human knowledge: the mind, the physical object, and the perception or idea in the mind that represents that object. Locke, however, attempted a partial solution to such problems. He did this by making the distinction between primary and secondary qualities. Primary qualities produce ideas that are simply consequences of the subject's perceptual apparatus. With focusing on the Primary qualities it is thought that science can gain reliable knowledge of the material world. Locke fought off skepticism with the argument that in the end both types of qualities must be regarded as experiences of the mind. Lockes Doctrine of Representation was therefore undefendable. According to Berkley's analysis all human experience is phenomenal, limited to appearances in the mind. One's perception of nature is one's mental experience of nature, making all sense data objects for the mind and not representations of material substances. In effect while Locke had reduced all mental contents to an ultimate basis in sensation, Berkeley now further reduced all sense data to mental contents. The distinction, by Locke, between qualities that belong to the mind and qualities that belong to matter could not be sustained. Berkeley sought to overcome the contemporary tendency toward atheistic Materialism which he felt arose without just cause with modern science. The empiricist correctly aims that all knowledge rests on experience. In the end, however, Berkeley pointed out that experience is nothing more than experience. All representations, mentally, of supposed substances, materially, are as a final result ideas in the mind presuming that the existence of a material world external to the mind as an unwarranted assumption. The idea is that to be does not mean to be a material substance; rather to be means to be perceived by a mind. Through this Berkeley held that the individual mind does not subjectively determine its experience of the world. The reason that different individuals continually percieve a similar world and that a reliable order inheres in that world is that the world and its order depend on a mind that transcends individual minds and is universal (God's mind). The universal mind produces sensory ideas in individual minds according to certain regularities such as the laws of nature. Berkeley strived to preserve the empiricist orientation and solve Lockes representation problems, while also preserving a spiritual foundation for human experience. Just as Berkeley followed Locke, so did David Hume of Berkeley. Hume drove the empiricist epistemological critique to its final extreme by using Berkeley's insight only turning it in a direction more characteristic of the modern mind. Being an empiricist who grounded all human knowledge in sense experience, Hume agreed with Lockes general idea, and too with Berkeley's criticism of Lockes theory of representation, but disagreed with Berkeley's idealist solution. Behind Hume's analysis is this thought: Human experience was indeed of the phenomenal only, of sense impressions, but there was no way to ascertain what was beyond the sense impressions, spiritual or otherwise.
